Why do LED bulbs look harsh?
"Harsh", "clinical", "cold" — it's the most common disappointment with a new LED. The good news is there are only really three causes, and each has a simple fix.
1. The colour temperature is too high
This is the usual culprit. A bulb around 5000–6500K throws a cool, blue-white "daylight" light that feels clinical in a home. For living spaces, drop to 2700–3000K warm white; for kitchens and bathrooms, 3000–4000K. See warm vs cool white for the full picture.
2. Glare from a clear or exposed bulb
A clear bulb with a visible filament, or any bright bulb on show, produces a sharp point of light that the eye finds harsh. A pearl, frosted or opal finish diffuses the light and softens it. If the bulb sits in an open pendant, a crown-mirror bulb helps too.
3. Low colour rendering (CRI)
Even a warm bulb can make a room feel flat if its CRI is low, because colours look washed out. Look for a bulb rated CRI 90+ in rooms where colour matters.
