Warm white vs cool white vs daylight

Colour temperature is the "mood" of a bulb — whether it glows warm and yellow or crisp and blue-white. It is measured in Kelvin (K), and getting it wrong is the single most common reason a new LED "looks off".

What Kelvin means

Colour temperature runs on a scale measured in Kelvin. The lower the number, the warmer and yellower the light; the higher the number, the cooler and bluer it looks. It is slightly counterintuitive: a "warm" bulb has a lower number, and a "cool" bulb a higher one. Kelvin says nothing about brightness — that is lumens.

The three bands

Why daylight can feel harsh

Daylight bulbs are not "bad" — they are simply designed for alertness and detail, not relaxation. Put a 6500K daylight bulb in a bedroom or living room and it can feel cold, clinical and unwelcoming, a bit like a hospital corridor. Reserve the cool, blue-white end of the scale for garages, workshops, security lights and close-up tasks. What to buy

For most homes, 2700K to 3000K warm white is the safe, comfortable choice. Step up to 3000–4000K in kitchens and bathrooms where you want clearer task light, and only go to daylight in genuinely functional spaces.
