Clear vs pearl light bulbs
Beyond brightness and colour, bulbs come in different finishes โ and the two you'll see most are clear and pearl (also called frosted or opal). They put out the same light; they just deliver it very differently.
Clear bulbs
A clear bulb has see-through glass, so you see the filament or LED elements directly. This gives a sharp, sparkly light that looks lovely in decorative fittings โ exposed pendants, vintage-style filament bulbs, chandeliers. The downside is glare: a visible bright point can feel harsh, especially at eye level or in an open fitting.
Pearl, frosted and opal bulbs
These have a coated or diffused glass that scatters the light, hiding the filament and producing a softer, more even glow. They reduce glare, which makes them the safer choice for everyday general lighting โ the kind of light you live under rather than look at.
Which to choose
| Finish | Best for |
|---|---|
| Clear | Decorative, exposed filament bulbs and feature fittings |
| Pearl / frosted / opal | General room lighting, anywhere you want to avoid glare |
A simple rule: if the bulb is on show and meant to be admired, clear can look great; if it's there to light the room, choose pearl or frosted. If a clear bulb feels glary, see why LED bulbs look harsh.
